About Us

What is the Moon Society?

The Moon Society is a community of individuals, organizations, and companies committed to the permanent settlement of the Moon and to building a thriving economy that spans Earth, the Moon, and the space between. We pay particular attention to commercial development projects, and we work to build the social and political environment those projects need to succeed.

The Moon Society vision

We envision a future where permanent civilian settlements on the Moon use local resources to build a robust Earth-Moon economy, improving the quality of life for everyone, on Earth and beyond.

The Moon Society mission

The Moon Society’s mission is to enable permanent settlement of the Moon by building a community of mutually beneficial partnerships. That community covers everything the effort needs: technology research, economic development, and public education.

How will the Moon Society accomplish its goals?

  • Create partnerships and collaborate with like-minded organizations to remove obstacles, identify opportunities, and share resources.
  • Promote public and entrepreneurial interest and involvement in the exploration, research, development, and settlement of the Moon.
  • Support the development of the technologies and techniques that settlers will need.
  • Be the leading voice for the development and settlement of the Moon.

Who can become a member of the Moon Society?

Anyone! Our members come from many countries and all walks of life. You don’t have to be a space professional to have good ideas or the drive to see a project through.

Everyone can contribute something meaningful. Space advocacy touches many disciplines, and people with no previous experience learn new skills here all the time, helping in ways large and small.

Whatever your interests, talents, and experience, there is a role for you. We welcome you to join our membership, contribute to an existing project team, or start a new project that puts your skills to work on our shared goals. For suggestions on where to start, contact us and tell us about yourself. Building permanent settlements on the Moon will take all of us working together.

I’m excited and want to get actively involved!

Great! The Moon Society has Projects that need your enthusiasm and talents. We look for people with good ideas, the drive to see projects succeed, and the willingness to give their time and energy to make permanent settlement of the Moon a reality.

You can also join our larger community. There may be a Chapter in your area where you can meet and work with people who share your interest. If there isn’t one, we can help you start and grow it. And our online workspace is always open. We also partner with other like-minded space organizations that welcome an extra pair of hands.

You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference. You just have to show up.

Are memberships and donations to the Moon Society tax-deductible?

Yes. The Moon Society has been a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, registered with the United States Internal Revenue Service and the State of Texas, since 2000. We have earned a Silver Seal of Transparency from Candid, a respected service that reviews and audits nonprofits.

A brief history of the Moon Society

The Moon Society was formed at its Organizing Conference on July 22-23, 2000. It began as the membership organization for the Artemis Society, freeing that group to concentrate on the Artemis Project itself. The Moon Society has since become the primary organization, working to return human beings to the Moon and advocating for permanent commercial settlement. We have created several publications (most recently the Outbound Newsletter and the book publishing imprint Luna City Press), and we carry out public outreach through conferences, chapter events, and online discussions.

A full history of the Moon Society is available in the Moon Society Primer, which was included in Peter Kokh’s book A Pioneer’s Guide to Living on the Moon, published by the Society in 2018.
