The Moon Society formally applauds the “Ignition” initiative announced by NASA. The strategic realignment toward a permanent human presence on the lunar surface, prioritizing actual habitation over orbital waypoints, represents a historic pivot toward a realistic and sustainable future in space.

For years, our organization has advocated for a “Surface-First” architecture. We believe the Moon is not merely a waypoint, but a vast continent of opportunity. NASA’s commitment to an accelerated cadence and surface-focused operations validates the lifework of visionaries like Peter Kokh and the thousands of pioneers within our society.

We specifically endorse the following pillars of the Ignition Initiative:

  • The Transition to Settlement: By focusing on surface infrastructure, NASA is moving beyond “flags and footprints” toward true lunar settlement.
  • In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU): The emphasis on extracting materials from the lunar regolith is the only path to economic autonomy. The Moon must provide the “bricks and mortar” for its own growth.
  • The Lunar Proving Ground: A robust lunar civilization is the essential prerequisite for any successful mission to Mars. The Moon is the “University of the Frontier” where we will master the arts of low-gravity survival and industrialization.

Our Commitment: The Moon Society stands ready to offer our deep repository of technical research and community expertise to support this new mission cadence. We believe that by lighting the fuse on the lunar surface, NASA is ensuring that humanity’s expansion into the solar system is permanent, profitable, and profound.

Ad Astra per Luna.
